Guys I'm going to graduate soon . I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for working on this club.. Sure it's kinda dead but I think the relationships that we've forged and crazy memories we created are ours for keeps! Be proud that we tried; something different, to be different and to not get inline.

First skatepark mixes kids

KABUL - AFGHANISTAN'S first skateboarding park and school opened in Kabul on Tuesday with a boarding showdown between dozens of youngsters - ranging from ministers' children to streetkids - that it aims to bring together.

'Skateistan' started two years ago in a dried-up fountain in the heart of the Afghan capital, when two Australians with three skateboards started teaching a small group of fascinated kids.

Now dozens of boys and girls from across all social classes can mix in a giant indoor park that looks like a cross between a military hangar and an urban hangout, festooned with the names of fashionable skating brands that have sponsored the park.

Classes are free, and at the back of the skating section are neat changing areas and classrooms where children can study everything from basic literacy to advanced computing when they put down their boards and take off their helmets.

One of the world's poorest and most conservative countries seems a strange place to set up a skateboarding school, but the founders say it has proved a remarkably successful way to reach out to marginalised children, particularly girls.

'We managed to bring together about 200 street children, this sport is not only entertainment for them, it is also giving them hope for their future,' said Afghan Olympic Committee head Mohammad Zahir Aghbar.

OK, maybe it's been half-dead.
But...cityskating resuscitates!

HIGHLightS
Boss Saddiq took time off from Honors Hell to join us!
Other EXCOs in attendance: Azhar, Wilson, XA, Riya, Shamil
We welcome new members Ashton & Nigel.
Two newbie girls lost their way! (OHNOES!)
Joined the Bosses to break fast at KFC Funan around 7.
Skated around SMU before the security guard chased us away. :)
Shifted to Dhoby Ghaut.

- B1&B2 leave for movie with their girlfriends.
- XA, Riya & Ashton go drinking, played pool & skated to Clarke Quay.

PS. Amidst drinking BigGulp, 100Plus & Orangina from trusty 7-eleven, we came up with the idea to draw out a petition to legalize skating at Dhoby Ghaut. Skaters flock that area on the weekends. Anyway, we don't think anyone's tried petitioning and since SMU is kinda off-limits now too (there are CCTVs there!), we could give it a try. We need new hangouts. So give us your opinions in the chatbox!

Matriculation Fair 2008 (FASS)

Being in the Matriculation Fair is the first time we're being recognised in a school event, and we already got into trouble with some student bodies. What a great way to start the year!

Trouble finding us at the Fass fair however didn't really spoil all the fun. We got 120 students to sign up! And, we got to flirt...I mean, make friends with all sorts of students. Wilson got to show off his tricks, and Shamil and Saddiq put their charm to the test by harassing all the ladies who passed by (so, don't be surprised if we get 90% female members at the end of the recruitment). And one guy, named Mizra (hope I got that right) who self-proclaimed that he was one of the club's founders showed up for the first time. Although he didn't stay up for the rest of the afternoon, he was a big help in getting potential members and in entertaining us with his amusing dance moves. And let's not forget Riya, who provided us with sweets that kept some of our energy up, and who also made great sacrfices for the club (which will not be mentioned here) but which all turned up as a blessing in disguise because she got to join almost 80% of the clubs in school and make some cool friends along the way.

If we started on the wrong foot with some students, we seriously didn't mean to. We're new to all this. Because like what our shirts say, we take control. Maybe, we just had a little hard time adjusting.

170408 Evening Skate session at Yong Siew Toh

The Thursday skate session had come unexpected while everyone was busy preparing for the finals. Despite all of that, one of our club members, Khyn, had managed to find some time amidst all of that stress. We headed down to the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music to check out the place. From afar, it did seemed like a great place to skate . The open areas and the absence of walls did help dissipate the noise better from our falling decks. But then again, upon closer inspection, the concrete surfaces weren' t as smooth as we thought it would. If anyone ever noticed, there is a long and flat architectural feature that looked extremely inviting to pull off grinding stunts. Unfortunately though, the material that was used made it impossible to do so.

But anyway, we did stay for while, did a few tricks and of course had another run-in with security. One thing to note is that the conservatory is not within the jurisdiction of our in house campus security. It is being looked after by a private security firm instead. so, here are the photos taken around the area.

that's right ( after getting prompt responses from several members ). Hopefully by then everyone would have finished their exams and we could all carry on continuing this favorite past time of ours.

Anyway, if you're reading this post at this point of time when you should be mugging, it would be safe to assume that you're either really bored or maybe your papers are over. Skate Session 12.04.08 + Updates + Recomencement after the exams‏

It's heartening to see people turning up for the skate session today despite the impending deadlines and exams that are looming right around the corner. Kudos to the ones that made it today even though it rained for most part of it. Given the fact that most of us will be busy preparing and sitting for papers, skating sessions would definitely need to take break for the time being. Anyway, for the benefit of the current members and those who are still interested here are a few questions and updates :

Suggestions :

1 . Could you guys post the dates ( either via email or chatbox or comments ) of the final papers
that you guys will be sitting for? - anyone who finishes earlier could get together and have
session. Tentative recommencement day would be 6 weeks from the date of this
post.

2. This could be going against the grain of the skate tenets but how would you guys would like
the lessons to be conducted? - hopefully in this way, we could help keep the general interest
level up.

UPDATES :

+ A Facebook and Yahoogroups NUS Skateboard club account has been created. Please click on
the link ( facebook )to join if you haven't already done so. : ]

+ A typical new complete setup would be around S$90-$105 whereas a 2nd hand complete setup would be between S$50- S$80 if you're in luck. Go to Skateboarding.sg for good deals in the forums

In other news:

+ We had our first run-in with security today though no one got hurt.
+ If anyone is mugging in school late night and feels like skating, you could always drop by SDE

and look for Rashid. He's there 24/7 and you could always bunk by the sofa beds thats in his
studio or just drop in for some air conditioning.
